Enjoy the experience of a full day trip behind steam power as locomotive 5917 works its way up the Southern Highlands and on to Goulburn. Lap up the country charm of Australia’s first inland city for a leisurely lunch before heading back to Sydney through the afternoon.

Your journey starts at Sydney’s magnificent Central Station, travelling on the Main South line, picking up at Campbelltown before heading through the beautiful Southern Highlands and on to the Southern Tablelands city of Goulburn.

Hauling the Southern Highlands Picnic Train will be 5917, built by Baldwin (USA) in the 1950s for the NSW Government Railways. 

Ticketing options are perfect for singles, couples, small groups and families.

After arrival in Goulburn, you will have plenty of time to enjoy the many charms of this historic inland city. Why not take a self-guided heritage tour throughout the city picnic by the Wollondilly River along the walking trail!

If lunching at a restaurant in Goulburn, please book beforehand to avoid disappointment. 

Fare options will include Private Compartments (great for extended families or social groups), Family of Four booths, Duo seating for two and single tickets. You also have the option of hiring an entire carriage!

Please Note: All fares are for same-day return travel and are the same fare regardless of your choice of boarding station. You may also choose to disembark at a different station to which you originally boarded the train.

 

Private Compartment — $560 per group

Enjoy the benefit of an entire closed-off compartment to yourselves in a heritage side-coridor carriage — great for larger families and social groups!

One booking is good for up to a maximum of eight (8) people including children.

 

Family of Four — $360 per family

Four seat booth in a heritage railway carriage with table.

Classic Duo — $280 for two people

Window seating for two people in a classic heritage carriage in a spacious booth with table.

First Class Single — $160 per person

Single window seat in a First Class section with table.

Enjoy your own space in a Private Compartment

Toddlers: Babies in arms and small toddlers not requiring a booked seat may be brought along at no additional cost.

Buffet Car: The Buffet Car will not be available on this trip. We encourage passengers to bring their own picnic hampers.

 

BYO alcohol is allowed, however, large eskys obstructing access will not be permitted onboard.

 

Toilets: Toilets are available in most carriages, but will be locked-off at times.

 

Mobile Phones: There are limited charging points on the heritage equipment. It is recommended that you bring an external battery charger for your mobile devices.

COVID-19:

  • Passengers are required to wear a face masks while on station platforms

  • We recommend wearing face masks while seated and not eating or drinking

  • Passengers are asked to remain in their allocated seats as far as pracical

  • Passengers are required to follow all instructions from their carriage attendant

  • Other conditions may be implemented on the day depending on current COVID-19 restrictions

  • If the train is cancelled due to NSW Health restrictions, a full refund of the ticket price will be provided
